After a doctorate at Oxford on Early Rome and Latium from 1000 to 500 BC, Christopher moved to the University of St Andrews in 1992. He held the positions of Dean of Arts and then Vice-Principal. He was appointed Director of the British School at Rome in 2009.  His research interests are focused on the development of Rome as a political and social community, and on how this was represented in ancient historical writing and subsequent political thought.
